What is Microcement?

A seamless, waterproof surface finish applied over existing substrates.

Microcement is a polymer-modified cement coating applied in layers of 2-3mm thickness. Unlike polished concrete, microcement can be applied over existing surfaces including concrete, tiles, plywood, and fibre-cement board without demolition.

A properly installed microcement floor system includes: a damp-proof membrane (DPM), fibreglass mesh reinforcement, base coats, decorative topcoats, and protective sealers. This full system provides waterproofing, crack resistance, and long-term durability.

Microcement is suitable for: floors, walls, ceilings, benchtops, bathrooms, showers, wet rooms, and commercial spaces. It creates a seamless, grout-free surface that is waterproof when properly sealed, easy to clean, and available in a wide range of colours.

When to Choose Microcement

If you want seamless floors without demolition, microcement is the right choice. It applies over existing tiles or concrete.

If you want a grout-free bathroom, microcement eliminates tile maintenance and mould-prone grout lines.

If you want a specific colour match, microcement is tinted to your specification, unlike polished concrete which shows the aggregate beneath.

If your substrate is plywood or fibre-cement, microcement works. Polished concrete does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about microcement installation in Auckland.

How much does microcement cost in Auckland?

Microcement installation in Auckland costs between $280 and $550 per square metre depending on application type and project size. Floor installations range from $280/m² for large projects (100m²+) to $420/m² for small areas under 25m². Wet area walls and showers cost $350-$550/m². Prices include all materials, labour, and sealing. Minimum project charge is $3,500. All prices exclude GST.

Can microcement be applied over existing tiles?

Yes, microcement can be applied directly over existing tiles without demolition, provided the tiles are well-adhered and stable. The tile surface is prepared with a bonding primer, and the microcement system is applied over top. This makes microcement ideal for bathroom renovations where removing tiles would be disruptive and expensive. Loose, cracked, or hollow-sounding tiles must be repaired or removed before application.

Is microcement waterproof?

Microcement is waterproof when installed with the correct system. A full wet-area installation includes a waterproof primer, fibreglass mesh reinforcement, a waterproof base coat, decorative topcoats, and dual sealers. This system is suitable for showers, wet rooms, and bathrooms. Basic wall systems without the full build-up are water-resistant but not fully waterproof.

How long does microcement installation take?

Microcement floor installation takes 6-7 days minimum regardless of project size because each layer must dry before the next is applied. Wall installations take 4-7 days depending on the system. After installation, microcement requires a 7-14 day curing period before normal use. Light foot traffic is possible after 48 hours.

What is the difference between microcement and polished concrete?

Microcement and polished concrete are different products. Polished concrete is existing concrete mechanically ground and polished to expose aggregate. It requires an existing concrete slab. Microcement is a thin 2-3mm coating applied over existing surfaces including concrete, tiles, plywood, and fibre-cement board without demolition. Microcement offers more colour options and can be applied anywhere.

Does microcement crack?

Properly installed microcement with fibreglass mesh reinforcement is highly crack-resistant. The mesh distributes stress and prevents hairline cracks from substrate movement. However, if the substrate cracks significantly due to foundation settling or structural movement, the microcement may crack with it. Microcement follows the substrate—it is not structural.

How do you maintain microcement floors?

Microcement floors require minimal maintenance. Sweep or vacuum to remove grit, then mop with pH-neutral cleaner and water. Avoid acidic cleaners, abrasive scrubbers, and bleach. High-traffic areas may need re-sealing every 2-5 years. Use furniture pads and entrance mats. With proper care, microcement floors last 15-25 years.
